seepex, Inc. History - in the Americas
In 1981, Peacock, Inc. of Canada became the North American agent for Seeberger GmbH + Co. of Bottrop, Germany. Eager to take the seepex product line into the U.S. market next, they established the seepex Pump Division in East Aurora NY in January 1989.
Under the experienced leadership of Mike Dillon, who joined Peacock in 1989 after many years with a progressive cavity pump competitor, the seepex Pump Division of Peacock, Inc. relocated to Dayton OH. The facility on Valley Street was capable of receiving pumps, stocking repair parts and assembling small pump units. In April 1991, Seeberger GmbH + Co. purchased all the Dayton physical property from Peacock and established seepex, Inc. as a wholly owned subsidiary of the German parent company.
After several expansions on Valley Street, management decided it was time for a permanent, company-owned facility, which would demonstrate the seepex commitment to the North American market. Three acres of land were purchased in an industrial park outside Enon OH where an 8,000 square foot facility was built, dedicated in September 1997. Two years later, a 12,000 sq. ft. expansion was added, including production equipment for elastomer stator manufacture, which began in late 1999. A further 6,000 sq. ft. addition was completed in 2005; already, yet another expansion is being considered.
While much of the basic product design function originates with the parent company in Bottrop, seepex, Inc. adapts these products to gain broader acceptance within the American market. This includes motor, drive, and electrical variations, threading and machining standards for N.A., and various documentation requirements determined by numerous governmental and industry regulatory entities. In 2003, NSF-ISR approved seepex for ISO 9001:2000, certification that is unique to manufacturers and generally regarded globally as the highest level of attainable quality.
seepex, Inc., now comprising 60 employees, can now manufacture parts and export them back to the parent company, assemble all but the largest pumps in the product range, and stock virtually all the required repair parts. They have their own financial reporting functions, banking and credit agreements, sales and marketing staff, and engineering support. seepex, Inc. serves Canada and the U.S., in addition to Mexico, Central America and South America.
We are enthusiastic in several areas for the coming periods. After years of fighting the specifications that favored the gear-type universal joint in the wastewater and paper industries, seepex is now (almost) universally accepted in these applications. Much of the work we have done promoting the use of our pumps to replace reciprocating diaphragm pumps is also taking hold in water treatment plants and other industries. The food industry continues to increase as a percentage of our total sales; and as CIP becomes more common in these plants the advantages of our pumps over lobe pumps are also becoming recognized by users. The oil industry, although rather cyclical, continues to increase as a significant market. Of particular interest to us is growth in Latin America, where we made some significant changes in distribution. We see Latin America as the growth market for the future and an area where we need to strengthen our infrastructure and distribution capabilities. The prospects for seepex in the Americas is still bright and exciting!
