Gallagher Brothers, in Killybegs, Co. Donegal, is one of the largest seafood companies in Ireland and is involved in fish farming and catch processing. Their Killybegs fish-processing factory sorts, heads, tails and guts up to 11,000 fish per hour which creates a great deal of waste.

The starting situation
Previously, all of the surplus parts of the fish were flushed down into troughs and into a sump. They were then pumped through a screen to separate out the solid matter, which in turn was conveyed to a container for conversion to fishmeal at a local factory. The wastewater used to convey the parts was then discharged into the sea without treatment.
All of which was highly unsatisfactory: the process required the use of a large quantity of water and a lot of blood and soft offal was going into the sea. Something had to be done.

The solution
Following successful trials, 11 seepex pumps were installed, with the factory layout being adjusted to allow the pumps to deliver maximum advantage. One seepex BN pump was installed below each filleting machine and a collection chute was fitted to collect the guts and direct them to the suction port of the pump. Both the belt conveyor and the BN pumps discharge into a seepex BT open hopper pump at the end of each row of filleting machines. These pumps in turn pump the waste fish products directly into a container for processing into fishmeal.

The benefit
As a result, Gallagher Brothers have not only reduced the amount of water to be treated but have also reduced significantly the BOD level in the water treatment plant. And they have reduced their overall costs. What is more, further orders have now been received from two other fish processing plants in Killybegs.
