A leading european inland shipping company specialises in transporting liquid goods in bulk. Its fleet includes 38 modern tankers of different sizes and features and with a total transport capacity of 42,000 t and 24,000 m³ tank volume.
The tankers transport liquid goods such as acids and alkalis and a large number of other basic and special chemicals.

The starting situation
One of the newest tankers is now also used to transport calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate is a product that is used in the production of paper, among other things. Various paper factories along the Rhine and the Maas receive supplies. However, in view of the fact that the centrifugal pumps that were used for unloading experienced problems with the variable operating conditions and viscosity, it became necessary to invest in new pumps that were able to transport this medium economically.

The solution
As the company already had very good experience with seepex progressive cavity pumps, they turned to them to find a solution. However, until now, all of the pumps had been installed horizontally. But in order to save space and avoid any reconstruction of the tanks, the plan was now to install the pumps vertically. seepex installed pumps from the BE range. This is a progressive cavity pump, designed for vertical installation, fitted for this application with hydraulic motors.
