Sedimentation Starts Where Movement Drops
Sedimentation begins when lime milk slows down, remains static, or enters a part of the system where flow is not strong enough to keep solids moving. Low points, dead legs, oversized lines, poorly flushed sections, valve pockets, and idle dosing lines are common problem areas. Over time, particles collect and the slurry no longer behaves uniformly.
This creates two practical risks. The first is blockage. Settled material can compact and become difficult to restart, especially after shutdowns or low-demand periods. The second is inconsistent dosing. A pump may restart and pull a denser slug of lime milk into the line, followed by a thinner stream. From the control system’s point of view, the pump may appear to be operating correctly. From the process point of view, the amount of useful alkalinity arriving at the injection point may be changing.
This is why sedimentation is not only a mechanical issue. It can directly affect pH control.
